G. A. GALOYAN. Historical Roots of the Armenian People's Orientation on Russia and the Progressive Significance of Eastern Armenia's Reunion with Russia

The article shows that the Armenian people's orientation on Russia was deeply rooted in history, being prompted by its striving to cast off the age-old oppression by Turkey and Iran. This orientation dates back to the 16th century and was consonant with that of other Transcaucasian peoples. The author stresses that Russia played a positive role in stimulating the Armenian people's liberation movement. Her wars with Iran and Turkey in the first three decades of the 19th century (irrespective of the tsarist autocracy's aggrandizement policy) had a liberating character for the peoples of Transcaucasia, and the participation of the peoples of this territory in those wars on the side of Russia was a continuation of their struggle for liberation.

V. M. KHEVROLINA. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877 - 1878 and the Social Movement in Russia

The article examines the attitude of the different segments of Russian society towards the war of 1877 - 1878. The author shows that the working masses of Russia warmly sympathized with the war for the liberation of the fraternal Slav peoples and tried to help the army in different ways (joining the volunteer movement, collecting funds for the medical needs of the army, taking part in the activities of the volunteer sanitary units, etc.). The article analyzes diverse materials published in the democratic press which put forward a progressive programme of solving the Eastern question on the basis of duly considering, first and foremost, the interests of the Slav peoples themselves and securing full independence of their state system. The author clearly shows the complicated and contradictory character of the stand taken by the revolutionary-democratic circles which, on the one hand, sympathized with the cause of liberating the Slav peoples, while, on the other, regarded the war as a continuation of the reactionary internal policy of the tsarist autocracy and sought to take advantage of the increasingly tense political situation inside the country for the rapid spread of the revolutionary movement.

O. M. KOVALEVA. France and the All-European Conference on Security and Cooperation

The article examines such fundamentally important problems of European security and co-operation as consolidation of the territorial-political results of the second world war and postwar development, the relaxation of international tensions, the vital need of supplementing the political detente by a military detente in the light of their discussion at the All-European Conference. France's position on these problems merits attention inasmuch as she played an active part in discussing the questions figuring on the agenda of the Conference. Citing the work on the Final Act of the Conference as an example, the author illustrates the significance of Soviet-French co- operation for the consolidation of detente.

M. E. KHAZANOV. Tracing the History of the Palestinian Problem

The article highlights the principal stages in the development of the Palestinian problem. The author examines the political aspect of the emergence of the Palestinian resistance movement and the place it holds in the set of problems comprising the sum and substance of the Middle East conflict. The Palestinian problem is the pivot of contemporary dramatic events in the Middle East. Its just solution, with due consideration for the legitimate rights of the Arab people of Palestine, will contribute to the peaceful settlement of the long-drawn-out conflict in this region.

Debates about Adolf Hitler's death have raged for decades. Even eighty years after the end of World War II, there are those who doubt: did the Führer really kill himself in the Berlin bunker? Perhaps he fled to South America, as many of his aides did? These doubts were largely fueled by the fact that the Soviet Union had long kept silent about what exactly was found in May 1945 and where the remains of the most infamous dictator of the 20th century ended up.

Helium-3 on the Moon

Imagine a substance, one kilogram of which costs twenty million dollars. It is almost never found on Earth, but is abundantly scattered across the surface of the Moon. It can cool quantum computers to temperatures near absolute zero, and perhaps someday will become fuel for clean fusion energy. This isn’t the plot of a science fiction novel. This is helium-3 — a rare isotope that today has found itself at the center of a new space race.
