This is one of the most enduring and controversial stereotypes. It's important to distinguish two things right away: self-perception within Jewish culture and the external stereotype that often has an antisemitic nature.
Short answer: most Jews do not consider themselves 'the smartest' in the sense of biological superiority. This is more of an external label. However, within the community, there is indeed a culture of education and intelligence that gave rise to this myth.
Here's a detailed analysis of where this perception came from.
The paradox is that the idea of the "Jewish mind" is two sides of the same coin. For antisemites, it's proof of the "Jewish conspiracy." They seem to think that since Jews are everywhere (in science, finance, law), they are cunning, deceitful, and unite against the rest. For Jews themselves, this is often an explanation for their survival: in a world where you were forbidden from owning land and engaging in agriculture (as in medieval Europe), the only way to survive was literacy, trade, law, and medicine.
In Judaism, the study of sacred texts (Torah, Talmud) was never the province of only selected priests. Literacy and the ability to read were the obligation of every man. This created a unique culture. Respect for the book: in Christian Europe, even kings were often illiterate. In Jews, the rabbi (teacher) was revered more than a wealthy merchant. The Talmudic method: studying the Talmud is not rote memorization, but complex logical debates, searching for contradictions, argumentation. For centuries, Jewish boys trained their minds as other nations trained their bodies in jousts.
In the Middle Ages in Europe, Jews were often forbidden from owning land and joining guilds (Christians were forbidden from lending money at interest). They were left with "intellectual" professions: usury, jewelry making, law, medicine, trade. This "natural selection" over many generations solidified the connection between "Jew — intellectual labor."
IQ studies show that Ashkenazi Jews (European Jews) score an average of 0.5–1 standard deviation above the mean (about 110–115 vs. 100). Their verbal and mathematical intelligence are particularly high.
Why is that? There are two main versions.
Diseases as the Price of Genius. Ashkenazis often suffer from genetic diseases (such as Tay-Sachs disease). It has been found that carriers of mutated genes in one copy have a higher level of intelligence (better myelination of nerves). In conditions of life in ghettos and persecution, natural selection could have solidified these mutations.
Sociocultural selection. The smartest and most educated men in Jewish communities were the most desirable grooms (often poor but brilliant "yeshivah" students married the daughters of wealthy merchants). Social mobility went through intelligence, not physical strength or wealth.
If we take global statistics, Ashkenazis are indeed at the top in terms of Nobel Prizes. However, if we take today's PISA tests, the highest scores are shown by Chinese, Singaporeans, Koreans. Intelligence depends on culture and the education system, not blood.
Jews do not consider themselves "the smartest" in a chauvinistic sense ("we are the superior race"). But they (and the world) have noticed that for centuries, established conditions (ban on war and agriculture + culture of learning) have made them incredibly competitive in the world of ideas, technology, and money.
The most accurate answer: they believe that the environment and tradition forced them to develop their minds to survive, and it worked.
