Louis Vivin and André Bouchardon - Singers of the Sacred Heart

Their names say little to the general public. Louis Vivin was a postman. André Bouchardon was a gardener. Neither studied painting. But it was they, along with Séraphine and Bombois, who formed the core of the group that the German collector Wilhelm Ude called "Singers of the Sacred Heart" (Peintres du Sacré-Cœur). Their paintings are a hymn to simple life, faith, and labor. They wrote not for money, but because they could not help but write. Ude introduced them to the world in the 1920s. Since then, their works have adorned museums in Paris, New York, and Tokyo. Let's get to know these "Sunday painters".

Louis Vivin: the postman who painted Paris

Louis Vivin was born in 1861 in Paris. He worked as a postman, then as a railway employee. He started painting after retiring in 1920. He was self-taught. He painted urban landscapes: the banks of the Seine, bridges, the Eiffel Tower, squares. His technique was small brushstrokes, creating the impression of pointillism, but without a scientific approach. The figures of people are small, faces are not detailed. Houses are like toys, but recognizable. Vivin loved to depict lighting: moonlit nights, streetlights, reflections in the water. Ude discovered his works at a paper dealer and was amazed. He included Vivin in the "Sacred Heart" group. Vivin died in 1936, never achieving widespread recognition. Today he is called a "naive impressionist".

André Bouchardon: the gardener who painted the Bible

André Bouchardon was born in 1873 in Chinoise (Loire Valley). He worked as a gardener, a vine grower. He started painting late, after 50. He was inspired by biblical stories and ancient mythology. His "Creation of the World" is an Eden where animals live peacefully with humans. "The Battle of the Giants" is like a child's game. Bouchardon could not draw anatomy, but his characters are recognizable. He painted vividly, pastosely, often using pure colors. He loved to depict trees with round crowns, curly clouds. Ude discovered Bouchardon in 1921, buying several paintings. Bouchardon started painting constantly, leaving over 200 paintings. He died in 1958.

Style: what unites these artists

Both Vivin and Bouchardon belong to naive art (art brut). Their works are characterized by the absence of academic canons: perspective is distorted, figures are schematic, colors are localized. But there is charm in this "incorrectness." They did not depict life, they sang it. Ude wrote: "Their art comes from the heart, bypassing the mind." This is the "Singers of the Sacred Heart" — they expressed love for God and the world through simple forms. Unlike surrealists, they were neither shocking nor intellectual. They were sincere.

Differences between Vivin and Bouchardon

Vivin is a city artist. His Paris is empty, but it is not frightening, it is soothing. He loves architecture, water, the sky. Bouchardon is a rural dweller. His world is fields, rivers, ancient heroes. Vivin paints with fine brushstrokes, almost transparently. Bouchardon paints thickly, reliefly. Vivin avoids violent subjects, Bouchardon has battles and death (but not terrifying). Vivin is a lyricist, Bouchardon is epic.

The role of Wilhelm Ude

Ude searched for these artists all over France. He bought their paintings at a low price, organized exhibitions. Thanks to him, their works were not destroyed or forgotten. Ude called them "the voices of silent France." After World War II, he emigrated to the United States, but continued to promote their creativity. Today, you can see their works in the Ude Museum in Paris (La maison de l‘art brut).

Legacy and influence

Louis Vivin and André Bouchardon influenced many modern primitive artists. Their works are valued for their authenticity. In 2026, retrospectives will be held in the museums of Orléans and Tours.
