Uljanov Day, or Lypov Color
Ulyanov Day, or Lime Blossom: The Meaning of a Festival That Smells of Honey and Love In the folk calendar, July 4th is marked by a special date — Ulyanov Day, also known as Lime Blossom. This is not just another day in the summer lineup. It is a blend of Christian remembrance of a saint, pagan veneration of a sacred tree, and a touching legend about two lovers who never met. Each name of this festival — Ulyanov Day, Lime Blossom, Ulyandень — carries its own meaning, tradition, and magic. On July 4th (June 21st in the old style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyr Julian of Tarsus. This saint lived in the 3rd–4th centuries in the city of Tarsus (in modern-day Turkey) and from a young age professed the Christian faith. At the age of 18, he was subjected to cruel persecutions by pagans. Julian was imprisoned and tried to renounce Christ, but he remained steadfast in his faith. Along with him, his mother was also executed. According to tradition, the youth was placed in a sack with snakes and thrown into the sea. Later, his remains were found and became famous for miraculous healings. In Russia, the name Julian was transformed into the more familiar "Ulyan," so the day of his memory received the folk name — Ulyanov Day. In the folk calendar, this date is also closely associated with the veneration of saints with similar names — presbyter Julian and deacon Julian, which further strengthened the common name "Ulyanov." Natural Essence: The Beginning of Lime Blossom The second, no less important name of the festival is Lime Blossom. It is related to the fact that by the beginning of July, in the central part of Russia, the mass blooming of lime trees begins. In the peasant tradition, this was a significant event: lime was considered a sacred tree, a moth ... Read more
