The Moon is an ideal base for observing space. And perhaps it will become a launchpad for flights to Mars.
The NASA Artemis program is not just \"another landing.\" It is the creation of a long-term infrastructure on the Moon: a base at the southern pole, lunar modules, an orbiting station Gateway. China, together with Russia, is building the International Scientific Lunar Station. Private companies, such as SpaceX and Blue Origin, are preparing their missions. The Moon is becoming a point of intersection of state and private interests. This is no longer a race for prestige, but an economic and strategic necessity.
Moreover, the Moon is a scientific laboratory. There, in low gravity, experiments can be carried out that cannot be reproduced on Earth: studying the behavior of materials, biological systems, physical processes. This may lead to discoveries in materials science, medicine, and energy. The Moon is not the end of the road, but the beginning.
The new landing will be different. In 1969, we had three days on the Moon, and all we could do was collect rocks and plant a flag. Today we have robots, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and ion thrusters. We can build bases from lunar soil, extract water, use solar energy. We can stay on the Moon for months and then send expeditions further.
The Artemis program envisions a landing on the southern pole. It will not just be \"visit,\" but \"stay.\" Initially for a few days, then for weeks, then for months. By the 2030s, it is planned to create an inhabited base where people can live and work. This sounds like science fiction, but it is a real plan. Technologies allow it. Only political will and funding are left.
However, there are also problems. Long-term stay in low gravity is harmful to health. Radiation on the Moon is 200 times stronger than on Earth. Dust, which settles on equipment, is abrasive and toxic. Psychological loads of isolation. All this will have to be solved. But it is these challenges that make the mission interesting — we are not just going where we have already been, we are going where we will be solving fundamentally new tasks.
There is also another reason — romantic. We are a species that looks up at the sky. This is ingrained in us by evolution. We cannot not look at the stars, not dream about what is behind them. The Moon is the nearest goal that gives us hope that we will not forever sit on Earth. It is a symbol that we can overcome our limits. It brings back the feeling of adventure that is lacking in a world where everything has already been opened and explored.
Psychologists call this the \"effect of overview\" — when cosmonauts, looking at Earth from space, feel the unity of humanity and existential excitement. The Moon gives this effect even to those who observe it from Earth. It reminds us of the scale of the Universe and our place in it. And this is not less important than scientific discoveries.
Moreover, the Moon is a platform for inspiration. A new generation grew up on stories about Apollo, but never saw a landing. The new era of lunar expeditions can give them their own \"story,\" their own myth. This is important for culture, education, and spirit. Because without dreams, we stop moving forward.
If the plans are realized, we will see the first \"cities\" on the Moon this decade — modular bases where scientists, engineers, and even the first space tourists will live and work. SpaceX and other companies are already selling tickets to low Earth orbit, and in a few years they will offer tours to the Moon. This will be expensive, but it will happen. The Moon will no longer be a place for chosen heroes — it will become a place for everyone who has the desire and means.
Lunar industry is also not far off. The extraction of helium-3, which can be used for thermonuclear fusion, may become an energy breakthrough. The extraction of rare metals may become an economic stimulus. The construction of telescopes on the far side of the Moon may be a scientific breakthrough. This is not futurism, this is the nearest prospects. The question is not \"if,\" but \"when.\"
Of course, there are also risks. Militarization of space, contamination of the lunar environment, unfair distribution of resources. But these risks are not a reason to give up on dreams, but a reason to make them right. International agreements, such as the Outer Space Treaty, already regulate the use of the Moon. New laws are likely to be introduced to ensure peaceful settlement.
The attraction of the Moon is not just physics. It is psychology, history, culture, and the future. It attracts us because it is our nearest goal, our springboard into the great cosmos. The new landing is not a repetition of 1969, but the beginning of a new era where the Moon will not just be a point on the map, but a home for science, industry, and even art.
We will return to the Moon not because we have been there before, but because we have not lived there yet. We will return to learn to live outside Earth, to understand how we are structured, to find answers to questions we have not even learned to ask.
