Emotional burnout is not just fatigue, but a state of deep physical, psychological, and emotional exhaustion that occurs as a result of prolonged stress at work. The World Health Organization recognizes burnout as an official diagnosis related to professional activity.
When the volume of tasks constantly exceeds a person's resources, chronic overexertion occurs. Working without breaks, overtime, constant deadlines, and the inability to \"switch off\" lead to the point where the body simply does not have time to recover.
When a person cannot influence their work schedule, the order of task execution, or decision-making, a feeling of helplessness arises. The inability to influence the result and the lack of choice cause chronic stress.
Burnout often occurs when efforts are not accompanied by decent pay, recognition, or career growth. This is especially true in situations where a person puts their soul into work but receives only criticism or indifference.
Injustices, favoritism, unstable rules, and the lack of fair assessment all destroy trust and a sense of security. When a person feels undervalued, their motivation falls, and stress increases.
Isolation in solving complex tasks, the absence of help from management or colleagues, and the inability to share problems all enhance a sense of isolation. Support is a crucial buffer against stress.
When a person's personal values differ from corporate ones, an internal conflict arises. For example, when a person has to deceive customers, sacrifice quality for profit, or violate ethical norms, it destroys them from within.
Monotonous work that does not bring satisfaction and does not have a visible result causes apathy. When a person does not see the meaning in what they are doing, their energy runs out much faster.
People who demand perfection from themselves are in constant tension. The fear of making a mistake, doing something imperfectly, or not meeting expectations leads to the fact that they work themselves to the bone, not allowing themselves to rest.
Burnout is prone to people in helping professions (doctors, teachers, social workers), managers, service industry workers, specialists working with people, and everyone who works in conditions of intense communication and high responsibility. Perfectionists and people with high internal motivation are especially vulnerable.
It is important to understand that burnout is not a personal weakness, but the result of systemic problems in the organization of work. Employers are responsible for creating a healthy environment, and employees should take care of their boundaries. Only joint efforts can prevent this epidemic of modern society.
