Bavaria is the largest federal state in terms of area in modern Germany. It is located in the southeast of the country and borders Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. Its capital and largest city is Munich.
The history of Bavaria spans over a thousand and a half years. The first Duchy of Bavaria emerged in the 6th century AD during the Great Migration of Peoples. For centuries, this territory was an independent duchy, then an electorate, and in the 19th century, an independent kingdom. Only in 1871 did Bavaria join the German Empire, retaining significant autonomy. Bavarians are still proud of their unique history and distinctiveness that sets them apart from residents of other German states.
Bavarian culture is well-known worldwide. It is the birthplace of the famous Oktoberfest beer festival, which is held annually in Munich and attracts millions of tourists. Bavarian cuisine is famous for its meat dishes, smoked sausages, pretzels, and, of course, excellent beer, which is brewed here according to age-old traditions, adhering to the strict Reinheitsgebot law of 1516.
Bavaria is also a land of picturesque Alpine mountains in the south, crystal-clear lakes, medieval castles, and cozy towns. One of the main tourist jewels is the Neuschwanstein Castle, built by King Ludwig II. It is considered one of the most beautiful castles in the world and served as the prototype for the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland.
The economy of Bavaria is one of the most powerful in Germany and throughout Europe. It is home to headquarters of such globally renowned companies as BMW, Audi, Siemens, Allianz, and many others. Bavaria is a high-tech region leading in the automotive, aerospace, biomedicine, and IT industries.
Special attention deserves Bavarian traditional attire: leather short pants (lederhosen) for men and corseted dresses (dirndls) for women. They are rarely worn in everyday life, but on holidays, folk festivals, and, of course, at the Oktoberfest, Bavarians happily put on their national costumes, emphasizing their loyalty to the traditions of their ancestors.
