Russians and Kazakhs are two large peoples living in the post-Soviet space. Despite their millennia-old neighboring and close historical ties, there are many differences between them, caused by different origins, cultural traditions, religion, and way of life. Let's consider the main distinctions.

Origin and Ethnogenesis

Russians belong to the East Slavic group of peoples. Their ancestors are East Slavic tribes - Krivichs, Vyatichs, Slaves, and others, who in the 9th-10th centuries formed the Ancient Russian State. Kazakhs belong to the Turkic group of peoples. Their ethnogenesis was formed on the basis of Turkic and Mongolian tribes inhabiting the territory of modern Kazakhstan since ancient times. The Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate had a great influence.

Language

The Russian language belongs to the East Slavic subgroup of the Indo-European language family. It uses the Cyrillic script. The Kazakh language belongs to the Turkic language group (Kipchak subgroup). It is most closely related to the Kyrgyz, Karakalpak, and Bashkir languages. The script uses Cyrillic, but since 2018, there has been a phased transition to Latin.

Religion

The majority of Russians follow Orthodoxy (the Russian Orthodox Church). Orthodoxy was adopted in 988 and had a huge impact on the formation of Russian culture, statehood, and mentality. The majority of Kazakhs follow Sunni Islam of the Hanafi school. Islam began to spread in the Kazakh steppes in the 10th-12th centuries and became an integral part of Kazakh culture and everyday life.

Traditional Way of Life

Russians have led a sedentary way of life for centuries, engaging in agriculture, livestock farming, and crafts. The traditional dwelling is a wooden izba with a stove. Kazakhs led a nomadic and semi-nomadic way of life, engaging in livestock farming (raising horses, sheep, camels). The traditional dwelling is a yurt, which is easily assembled and disassembled, making it convenient for nomadic life.

Culture and Traditions

Russian culture is rich in calendar holidays (Maslenitsa, Pascha, Trinity), folklore, folk crafts (Khokhloma, Gzhel, Matryoshka). Literature, music, and ballet occupy an important place. Kazakh culture is imbued with nomadic traditions: the Nauryz holiday, aitys (a competition of akyns), baiqa (horse races), hunting with a golden eagle. Oral folk creativity - epic, songs, legends - is highly valued.

Cuisine

Russian cuisine is diverse: soups (borshch, shchi, uha), porridge, blinis, pies, dumplings. Vegetables, mushrooms, berries, fish are widely used. Meat is usually beef, pork, poultry. Meat is most often beef, pork, poultry.

Mentality and National Character

Russians are often attributed with breadth of soul, emotionalism, patience, collectivism, a tendency to introspection. Russian culture is characterized by dualism: the combination of sorrow and joy, tragedy and comedy. Kazakhs are distinguished by hospitality, which has deep roots in the nomadic tradition (entertaining a traveler was considered a duty). They value respect for the elderly, family ties, calmness, and prudence. Kazakhs are more reserved and practical than Russians.

Family Structure

In a Russian family, historically, the relationship between spouses was more equal, although the head of the family was often a man. Children are raised in love, but with a certain strictness. In Kazakh culture, the patriarchal order is preserved more obviously. Elders enjoy unchallengeable authority. Marriages are often oriented towards preserving the lineage and traditions.

Climate and Nature

The territory of Russia is vast and includes various climatic zones: from arctic deserts to subtropics. However, the majority of Russians live in temperate and continental climates with cold winters and warm summers. Kazakhstan is mainly steppes, semi-deserts, and deserts with a sharply continental climate: very cold winter (up to -40°C) and hot summer (up to +40°C).

Attitude to Work

Russians are known for their diligence, but sometimes show inertia and slowness. A communal culture (\"mir\") has formed in history, where mutual assistance is important. Kazakhs are also very hardworking, but their labor has historically been associated with nomadic livestock farming, which requires endurance, the ability to quickly adapt, and independence. Kazakhs value practicality and rationality.

Attitude to Food

Russians always have a lot of bread, soups, and hot food on the table. The traditional feast is accompanied by abundant treats and conversations. Kazakhs also respect bread, but the basis of their diet is meat and dairy products. It is important to note that Kazakhs do not consume pork due to religious (Islamic) norms.
