Why do mushroom pickers hang a bell on their backpack

Many mushroom pickers and forest tourists use bells attached to their backpacks in the hope of scaring off bears. It is believed that the sound will warn the animal of a person's approach, and the bear will leave the way, avoiding an encounter. However, how effective is this method in reality?

Does the bell work as a deterrent

The bell that mushroom pickers hang on their backpack is not a reliable protection against bears. Its main task is to warn the animal of your presence to avoid an accidental encounter, but as a deterrent, it works poorly.

Why the bell won't work as a protection

The main idea of using a bell is to make the bear hear the sound in advance and leave. Bears usually avoid encounters with humans and can leave the place if they notice a person in time. However, in practice, this method has serious drawbacks.

Firstly, the sound of the bell is often too quiet. In windy weather, in dense forests, or near a noisy river, the sound may not be heard by the bear at a sufficient distance. Secondly, bears get used to the sound over time and start to ignore it. Studies show that the sound of the bell does not associate with danger in their minds, unlike the sound of a human voice or the crackling of twigs. In one experiment, bears did not react to the sound of the bell, but immediately became alert at the sound of a broken pencil.

Moreover, there is an opinion that the unusual and rhythmic sound of the bell may, on the contrary, attract a curious bear. There are cases when a bear did not fear the sound of the bell and continued to approach a person who was jingling it. Therefore, relying solely on this method is not advisable.

What really helps in the forest

Instead of a bell, experts and experienced tourists recommend using more effective methods of warning bears. The simplest and most reliable method is to make loud sounds with your voice. Talk, sing, shout \"Hey, bear!\". A human voice is the most recognizable signal for the animal, which it will definitely not ignore.

It is also important to always have bear spray with you — a special pepper spray canister. This is the only means that can effectively stop an aggressive animal at close range. Unlike the bell, the spray really works in critical situations.

Conclusion

A bell can be an additional means of notification, but relying on it as the main protection is not advisable. It gives a false sense of security and distracts from the need to be attentive and use more effective methods. It is much more important to make noise with your voice, keep an eye on the situation, and always have bear spray with you. Only a comprehensive approach will ensure real safety in the forest.
