Dogs fart just like people — through the anus, releasing gases that form in the digestive tract. However, this process in dogs has its own characteristics, related to their anatomy and diet.
The main reason is swallowing air and fermentation in the intestines. Dogs often eat quickly, swallowing a large amount of air with their food. This air either exits through burping or proceeds further down the digestive tract and exits as gas.
The second source is intestinal bacteria. During the digestion of food, especially rich in fiber or carbohydrates, bacteria in the large intestine produce gases: nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. It is these gases that create the characteristic smell and sound.
Anatomically, the process is no different from human. Gases accumulate in the rectum. When pressure reaches a certain level, the sphincter relaxes, and gases exit the body. The sound depends on the speed of gas exit and the tone of the sphincter muscles. Dog farts can be as quiet as they are deafening.
The smell is another story. A large part of the gases have no smell: nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. The scent is created by sulfur-containing gases, primarily hydrogen sulfide. It is this that gives dog farts their characteristic smell of rotten eggs. The more sulfur-containing products (red meat, broccoli, cauliflower) and difficult-to-digest proteins there are in a dog's diet, the more pungent the exhalations will be.
British researchers conducted a survey among dog owners and found out which breeds fart the most and whose farts are the most offensive.
Top 10 breeds by frequency of farting (more than three times a day):
Top 10 breeds by odor intensity (percentage of owners who called the smell repulsive):
The frequency and intensity of farting in dogs depend on several factors.
If a dog farts too often, it may indicate food intolerance, allergy, or gastrointestinal disease. In such cases, it is recommended to change the diet or consult a veterinarian.
In normal circumstances, farting is a natural physiological process that should not cause concern.
