Despite the scare stories about the dangers of smoking, teenagers are still picking up cigarettes. E-cigarettes, IQOS, and vapes have only made the situation more complex. Why do children start smoking in 2026? It's almost always a combination of factors.
By the ages of 12-14, belonging to a group becomes more important than health. If everyone in the group smokes and you don't, you become the "odd one out." A teenager smokes to avoid teasing. Also, smoking is seen as a sign of coolness: "I'm grown-up, I can afford nicotine."
Smoking parents, older brothers, bloggers who smoke on camera (even vape) — all these are role models. If a father smokes and doesn't die from it, cognitive dissonance doesn't arise in a child.
Teens experience immense pressure: exams, first love, bullying. Smoking gives the illusion of relaxation (nicotine actually excites the nervous system, but the ritual of drawing on a cigarette works as a placebo). "A smoke break" becomes a legal way to get out of class and catch your breath.
In 2026, teenagers start with POD systems (single-use vapes) with sweet flavors. They seem harmless. But then it turns out that it's sad without nicotine.
How to fight it? Banning is useless. You need to set a personal example (don't smoke yourself), talk without lectures, and provide legal ways to relieve stress (sports, hobbies).
